The Environmental Badge and Fine particulates

Thanks to the successful introduction of the Austrian environmental badge in 2015 for all the lorry-traffic in the Austrian environmental zones, the government hopes to reach in a long term manner the requirements of the EU regulations regarding air pollutants and human health.
However, the environmental badge reduces mostly only the emissions of fine particulates (PM). As a consequence for not banning EURO 2 and 3 Lorries out of the environmental zones, and because of cars not being involved in the measure, the reduction of emissions of fine particulates (PM), nitrogen oxide (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) still remains insufficient. For that purpose, other measures should be consider, such as the extension of the environmental zones and entry bans for utility vehicles from the standards EURO 3 and 4.
