The Environmental Zone in Vienna

The environmental zone in Vienna has been introduced on 20.12.2013 by the 52nd regulation from the state governor of Vienna.
It is one of the first introduced in Austria.  The environmental zone came in force on 01.07.2014 and was first mandatory for Lorries and small trucks (N1, N2 and N3) from the EURO 0 and EURO 2 standards. Since 01.01.2016 are also vehicles EURO 2 banned from the zone.

If a driving ban is violated, an environmental badge is not on the windscreen or a vehicle drives too fast on a motorway marked "IG-L", fines of up to 2,000 euros apply in accordance with § 30 (4) of IG-L, Immissionsschutzgesetz - Luft of 27.11.2015. If a manipulation of the badge is detected, these fines can even be much higher.

Vienna is the capital of Austria and one of 9 Austrian federal states. Vienna is home to 1,9 million people on an area of approximately 415 km². The city-state comprises 23 municipalities where 17 measuring points for air quality have been installed. Of these, 6 are located in the city centre, 9 in the outer city area and 2 in Vienna's Green Belt.

Despite this even distribution of the measuring stations, the limit values for air quality are repeatedly exceeded. For this reason, the environmental zone covers the entire city of Vienna.

You will find more information about the environmental zone of Vienna and about entry bans for EURO 0, 1 and 2 vehicles on the website of the city of Vienna.
