Top low emission zones
Vienna
The Vienna environmental zone was decided on 20.12.2013 by the 52nd decree of the Governor of Vienna. It is one of the first environmental zones to be established in Austria and started on 1 July 2014. In addition to Vienna, there are other environmental zones in Austria in the regions of Burgenland, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria and Tyrol. To enter and pass through, one of the six environmental stickers is always required, depending on the Euro standard. However, this only applies to vehicles of class N (fiscal cars, vans, lorries). If the Austrian environmental sticker is not present, it can cost up to 2,180 euros.
Tyrol
Although the environmental zone was only introduced in 2016 and is therefore one of the youngest zones in Austria, it already has the strictest rules. The Tyrol environmental zone is located near the provincial capital of Innsbruck and only affects the A12 Inntal motorway, which is why long-distance traffic in particular has to be prepared for strict driving restrictions. Since 2020, trucks are only allowed to drive on the motorway in both directions between Langkampfen and Zirl with Euronorm 6. A violation and the absence of the purple environmental sticker will be penalised with over 2,000 euros.
Linz
The provincial capital of Austria was the first city to introduce a driving ban for taxis. The environmental zone introduced on 01.07.2020 is located in the so-called "Sanierungsgebiet", whereby the A7 Mühlkreis motorway is exempt from the driving bans. In contrast to the other environmental zones in Austria, no trucks of the classes N1-N3 are affected here. Entry is only permitted with an environmental sticker, as well as Euronorm 4 for diesel and Euro 3 for petrol and LPG vehicles. The only exception is for vintage cars older than 30 years.
Lower Austria
Lower Austria has set up one of the first environmental zones in Austria. The environmental zone started on 01.07.2014 and initially only applied to trucks of the classes N1, N2 and N3 with the EURO standards 0 and 1. Since 01.01.2016, a driving ban has also applied to EURO 2. In Austria's largest province in terms of area, the mandatory sticker applies in the districts of Bruck an der Leitha, Gänserndorf, Korneuburg, Mödling and Wien-Umgebung. If the Austrian environmental sticker is not present, it can cost up to 2,180 euros in fines.
Environmental sticker Austria (Umwelt-Pickerl)
In Austria, the environmental sticker has been compulsory for all trucks in classes N1-N3 since 01.01.2015. The environmental sticker is available in 6 different colours that stand for the respective EURO class. The colours available from EURO 1 to 6 are black, red, yellow, green, blue and violet. The last 6 digits of the chassis number are written on the sticker, the vehicle class and fuel type are stamped and a control number is embossed. The sticker is currently valid in seven environmental zones: Vienna, Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Styria, Tyrol, Linz and Burgenland. Violation of the environmental sticker obligation can be punished with heavy fines of up to 2,180 euros.
